204 FXUS65 KSLC 110305 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 905 PM MDT Wed Oct 10 2018 .SYNOPSIS...The progressive pattern will continue with a storm system impacting primarily central and southern Utah tomorrow. The area will see a temporary warming trend Friday into Saturday before a cold storm system moves through late in the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...The storm system that brought rain and snow to northern portions of the forecast area today is exiting to the east this evening. Associated precip has diminished but mostly cloudy skies remain in place over much of the area. This cloud cover will stop mins for tumbling too much overnight, keeping those temperatures near seasonal normals for most locations. A weak shortwave along the southern California coast is now making its way toward southern Utah, and the associated moisture and instability has allowed some light precip to develop over southern Utah. This valley rain and mountain snow will increase in coverage and spread northward during the day as the weakening wave slides into the state, phasing with a weak Pacific Northwest trough passing just north of the area. Best coverage with this system will be over central and southern Utah, though cannot rule out some precip over northern Utah and southwest Wyoming as well. Associated precip is progged to diminish by Friday as the southern system weakens and the northern system pulls away from the area, allowing for temporary warming and drying in northwest flow. Saturday should be the warmest day of the week, though maxes should still run 5F or more below seasonal normals. A backdoor system moving into the area from Canada will likely bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far as it moves into eastern Utah Saturday night into Sunday. Global models disagree on the exact placement of the system, but all keep the system on the dry side given where the air is coming from. Updated the forecast earlier to decrease POPs for northern Utah this evening. No additional updates planned. && .AVIATION...The SLC terminal will see VFR conditions through the night with cigs remaining above 6000 feet AGL. Southeast winds are expected to continue through the overnight hours. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
