716 FXUS65 KREV 092052 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 152 PM PDT Tue Oct 9 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Gusty northwest winds will continue this evening behind a cold front. A few showers are possible along the Highway 50 corridor, otherwise it will remain dry tonight. A couple sliders will move through tomorrow and Thursday with a few showers, cooler temperatures and north winds. Temperatures will then begin a slow warming trend into the weekend with light northeast winds, but gusty over the Sierra ridges. && .DISCUSSION... Few changes were made to the going forecast today, with the exception being this evening. Those adjustments were made this morning to add blowing dust to eastern areas along with a few showers near the Highway 50 corridor. A potent shortwave is moving into northeast Nevada this afternoon, and is pushing a cold front through western Nevada. Gusty northwest winds will continue this evening along with some blowing dust from the Black Rock and Smoke Creek Deserts, southeastward. Some HREF members continue to show a few showers developing behind the front along the highway 50 corridor. We will leave them in, but they will be shallow as there is a nice inversion around 600-650 mb. The next inside slider is weaker for Wednesday with winds not as strong. However, it will have a bit more moisture to work with so we are expected a few more showers from the Tahoe Basin and Sierra Front eastward. These showers would be light with amount less than a tenth of an inch. Also, with cooler air filtered in, snow levels will be running around 8000 feet. One more inside slider is expected Thursday with the main forcing shifting south into Mono-Mineral Counties. Amounts continue to be light, but may be a little higher over the higher elevations of Mono County. As the flow becomes a solid northeast upslope flow there Thursday evening, the showers could be a bit heavier. Behind that wave, the ridge over the East Pacific amplifies even more. This looks to keep a light north flow across the area with subsequent short waves tracking closer to the Continental Divide. Temps will slowly warm into next week, with general light northeast surface flow. The northeast winds will be a bit gusty at times over the Sierra Crest, particularly this weekend. X && .AVIATION... Expect windy conditions for the rest of the afternoon and evening as a cold front passes through our region. Brief periods of LLWS are possible along/ahead of this fast-moving front. The cold front will push south of US Highway 50 between the hours of 21-03Z. Sustained winds 15-20 kts with gusts to 30-35 kts are likely. Winds will diminish after 06-08Z Wednesday. For Wednesday and Thursday, a few rain showers are possible along with mountain obscurations in the Sierra. Surface winds will be breezy from the north, but not to the extent that they are today. As the secondary trough passes through the region tomorrow, mountaintop winds will also increase. As a result, turbulence is possible along and west of the Sierra. For Friday and Saturday, expect dry conditions with light winds. -Johnston && .REV Watches/Warnings/Advisories... NV...Lake Wind Advisory until 7 PM PDT this evening for Pyramid Lake in NVZ004.
