593 FXUS65 KPIH 101956 AFDPIH Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 156 PM MDT Wed Oct 10 2018 .DISCUSSION...The low pressure system that brought widespread rain and snow is pulling away from the region. An upper level trough is helping to push the low away from the area and that trough is causing a few light rain/snow showers to develop this afternoon across the central mountains into the upper Snake highlands. Models show showers persisting through the night, mainly in the Island Park area where an additional 2 inches is possible. Some patchy fog is possible late tonight and early Thursday morning. Winds will be mainly light and the lower atmosphere is very moist. Should see clearing conditions on Thursday as high pressure settles into the region. Looking at a back door cold front arriving on Saturday from the Yellowstone area. This may produce a few light showers across portions of the central mountains and eastern highlands. More importantly, we'll see a reinforcing shot of colder air with a killing freeze looking more likely for the eastern Magic Valley. Remainder of the forecast looks dry. Valle && .AVIATION...Ceiling and visibility should improve at all airports for the afternoon and early evening, however the boundary layer moisture is so high after all the rainfall that stratus, and potentially fog, will wreak havoc with airdrome openings in the morning. Expect marginal VFR conditions, and the potential is for worse, especially KBYI and KPIH where rainfall has exceeded one inch and a half inch, respectively. The area least likely to be affected in the morning is KSUN, if the northwest wind is strong enough. But watch for mid-day stratus problems as a potential when the wind shifts to southeasterly at that time. Messick && .FIRE WEATHER...The heaviest rain is over as of today, but slight chance to chance of showers, both rain and snow, will continue until clearing begins in Idaho, moving from west to east until it clears out of the ID-WY border on Thu afternoon/evening. Very dry and cold air will move into the fire weather area for Fri through the weekend, with temperatures staying below normal for this time of year until mid-week. High elevation locations may get some very dry air that will challenge the 15 percent critical threshold, but that does not last long. The north end of the forecast area will experience breezy and gusty conditions Fri night/Sat as a dry cold front pushes through, with downslope northerly wind nearly all day on Sat. Outside of the areas from Idaho Falls northward, the only effect from the front will be clouds and the high temperatures turning colder on Sat. Warming and drying resume, with high pressure and clear skies dominating the weather pattern until above normal temperatures return on Wed. Messick && .PIH WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. && $$
