700 FXUS65 KLKN 101041 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 341 AM PDT Wed Oct 10 2018 .SYNOPSIS...A trough of low pressure will keep cloudy and cool conditions across the state through Thursday. Light showers and some mountain snow are expected mainly across northern Elko county today before shifting to central Nevada Thursday. A warming trend along with an extended period of dry weather is expected Friday through early next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday. Trough axis draped over the state along with residual wrap around moisture will yield a few showers across northern Elko county today mainly in the higher elevations. However, precipitation amounts will remain low including over the South Sugarloaf burn scar. Snow levels will rise to 7500 ft by this afternoon with less than an inch of snow expected above this level. Focus for valley showers and mountain snow shifts southward tonight and Thursday with some leftover frontogenetic forcing still in place. 2-3 inches of snow is expected for higher elevations of GBNP before precipitation begins to diminish late Thursday across White Pine county. .LONG TERM...Thursday night through next Tuesday. Models are coming in a little drier Thursday evening with only a slight chance of showers over southern White Pine County, otherwise dry across the CWA. Higher pressure pushes in from the west Friday on through the weekend with high temperatures gradually rising to near or slightly above normal levels. With drier air pushing in, there will be fewer clouds and colder overnight lows which will be near to slightly below normal. && .AVIATION...Low pressure over the Salt Lake City area early this Wednesday morning will continue to move east away from Nevada. Given recent rainfall yesterday, cannot rule out some fog or low stratus developing toward daybreak through mid morning in the vicinity of KEKO and KELY. Otherwise, VFR conditions and lighter winds should prevail for the daylight hours of today through this evening. && .FIRE WEATHER...Fire weather concerns remain low, due to widespread wetting rains for early October. Additionally, RH recoveries will be good to excellent across the region. Light showers are again expected today across far northern Elko county moving into fire weather zones 457 and 455 Thursday.
