550 FXUS66 KHNX 101151 AFDHNX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford CA 451 AM PDT Wed Oct 10 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Weak disturbances will bring cooler weather during the next couple of days, with a chance of showers over the Southern Sierra Nevada on Thursday. Dry conditions will prevail Friday into early next week with temperatures warming to a few degrees above normal. && .DISCUSSION... Satellite loops show an upper level low pressure center swinging east away from the Great Basin area while shortwave energy drops south along the west coast. Closer to the surface, marine stratus extends inland to the coastal range with gusty winds blowing through the passes. The incoming impulses are progged to sharpen a northeast to southwest oriented trough across our area today and Thursday, with a closed low then forming off the coast of central California by Friday. Tropical system Sergio meanwhile is shown tracking northeastward across northern Baja during the period. Given this developing pattern, we can expect to see some synoptic cooling across our area fro the next couple of days along with a bit of cooler marine air spreading into the SJ Valley. Highs should end up a few degrees below climo today and Thursday. Increased instability with the passing energy will allow for some Sierra showers, mainly Thursday. Can't rule out a couple in the Yosemite vicinity this afternoon, but moisture will be more available Thursday. The closed low is forecast to drift southeast to near northern Baja through the weekend and into early next week while high pressure amplifies along the west coast. This will bring us dry conditions with temperatures rewarming during the period. Highs will return to a few degrees above normal by the start of next week. Late Thursday into Friday will see increased offshore flow as surface high pressure builds onto the Great Basin and upper winds turn easterly around the developing low. && .AVIATION...
