670 FXUS66 KHNX 092115 AFDHNX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford CA 215 PM PDT Tue Oct 9 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Dry weather will continue across the area through Wednesday then a chance of showers over the Southern Sierra Nevada on Thursday. Dry conditions will prevail Friday through the weekend. A cooling trend will take place Wednesday and Thursday followed by another warming trend Friday through the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...Amplified but dry pattern continues with a strong upper ridge over the east Pacific and an upper trough over the Rockies. The flow aloft has shifted to more northwesterly as an upper low has dropped down over the Pacific Northwest. Visible satellite imagery shows some fair weather cumulus developing in the Sierra Nevada similar to yesterday. A few high clouds will will pass over this afternoon as well. Temperatures are running slightly warmer than yesterday and should top out right around normal for this time of year. Winds are generally light right now but some westerly gusts around 30 mph will develop through coastal passes this evening and gusts to around 40 mph will be possible through the Kern County mountain passes. A diminishing trend is expected after midnight through sunrise. Another s/wv trough currently near the Queen Charlotte Islands will drop south to the central California coast on Wednesday. This will bring a little cooler temperatures to the district but there is little moisture to work with so just a few clouds are expected. Additional s/wv energy diving down on Thursday will bring just enough moisture and dynamics for a chance of some light showers over the Sierra on Thursday. Temperatures will nudge a little lower as well. A closed upper low is forecast to form off the central/southern California coast by Friday, underneath the strong EPAC ridge. Will continue to watch the track of Hurricane Sergio as it is expected to cross over the Baja Peninsula as a Tropical Storm on Friday. Models show a little moisture getting entrained in the offshore low but are keeping any precipitation to our south. Upper lows typically move very slowly and the models often struggle to predict their track. Current prognostications have it drifting towards northern Baja over the weekend and then over the lower Colorado River Valley early next week. A warming trend is forecast Friday into the weekend with temperatures a few degrees above normal. Little change is expected early next week. && .AVIATION...
