965 FXUS63 KGID 111157 AFDGID Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hastings NE 657 AM CDT Thu Oct 11 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Friday) Issued at 346 AM CDT Thu Oct 11 2018 Satellite imagery early this morning shows some low clouds holding tight across a few of our eastern counties...but progression of this cloud cover is to the south and east...and expect all of the local area to be mostly clear by sunrise. Where clouds are holding so far this morning...temps remain in the middle 30s...but where skies have cleared...upper 20s and lower 30s are being observed...and hence will keep the freeze warning and frost advisory in tact as previously forecast. For today...after a chilly start to the day...expect temperatures to climb a bit...but overall...a cool fall airmass will remain in place with most locations struggling to reach the upper 40s or lower 50 by afternoon. Despite these cool temperatures...today will not feel too miserable as ample sunshine and light winds are anticipated across the region. The next upper level system forecast to impact the area is currently dropping south towards Montana early this morning...and this system should provide forcing for some light rain or snow this evening across the local area. Because of the marginal temps aloft...do not anticipate any snowfall accumulation locally with this system...and expect any snow mixed with rain to remain north of I-80 overnight tonight and through the morning hours Friday. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 346 AM CDT Thu Oct 11 2018 Accumulating snowfall is possible primarily south of Interstate 80 Sunday and Sunday night as a cold and unsettled finish to the upcoming weekend is forecast. A ridge of high pressure will build across the plains late in the extended periods...with near to possibly above normal temperatures possible towards the end of next week. Overall...expect a west northwesterly flow pattern to start the extended periods as an upper level low cuts off from the main flow off the coast of southern California...with multiple disturbances in the resultant northwesterly flow aloft forecast to impact the local area. The most significant...and coldest system is forecast to cross the area on Sunday...when high temperatures are not expected to climb out of the 30s. With this very chilly airmass...expect to see the first accumulating snow of the season...with the focus being across north central Kansas. As it stands now...one to three inches of snowfall is in the current forecast...and will add some wording to the HWO to reflect this as models are in good agreement on timing and focus of this system across our southern counties. Once the associated cold front pushes south of the area and skies begin to clear...expect the coldest morning of the fall thus far...with lower to mid 20s forecast for the entire area to start the day on Monday...with a few temps dipping into the teens not out of the question as the current EC guidance has a low of 17 in Ord to start the day Monday. Thereafter....and dry mid week is forecast with moderating temperatures as heights aloft begin to rise and weak ridging is observed. This should result in a return to near normal temperatures towards the end of next week. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 12Z Friday) Issued at 556 AM CDT Thu Oct 11 2018 VFR conditions will prevail through the period with light northwesterly winds and mostly clear skies expected through the afternoon hours. Expect increasing mid level clouds this evening with a chance for some light rain as the next disturbance coming out of the Rockies crosses the local area. && .GID WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
